The I Ching or Book of Changes is a Confucian compilation, which uses a system of hexagrams chosen by casting lots, to access traditional wisdom for the time in which the oracle is questioned. The uncanny helpfulness of this book rests in the random nature of its offering. It asks the reader to apply a general insight to a particular situation, and this is nearly always helpful.
The Bible has been used somewhat in this way, but fails to be helpful because its wisdom is rarely of the level of generality shown by the I Ching, as it contains much narrative material that is simply confusing if selected randomly. The Christian Lectionary however, a thematically strutured selection of readings for every day in the year, provides a suite of Biblical wisdom, to be tested against the unknown circumstances of each day in the lives of individuals and communities.
This blog will use the Lectionary to provide a Christian “I Ching” perspective on my life and the news that comes to me. I hope it may be stimulating to people looking for wisdom, and that they may provide their own insights, as comments on the blog.
