TRANSLATION MATTHEW 13: 31
He set out another parable for them:
“The Rule of Heaven is like a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds but when it has grown it is the largest of domestic plants, becoming a tree, so that the wild birds come and nest in its branches. “
Notice that the world of Jesus is not static but always growing. God has not made a fixed world and left it, but is constantly engaged with a continuing creation.
So, where can we see God’s Rule?
At present ( The present of Matthew’s story) it is almost invisible to worldly eyes, as insignificant as the tiniest seed, but for those who trust, it is already growing into a tree where the wild birds will nest. It will be large and welcoming, even to those whom Jews consider to be wild birds.
This again expresses Matthew’s magical realism. Yes, the ministry of Jesus is small, up the reader must see its world-shaking power.
Some famous scholar said that he treated the miracles of Jesus as parables, and the parables as miracles.
I often think of the charities of the world, men and women engaged in millions of acts of kindness and justice: they are tiny compared with the massive powers of oppression and carelessness. They are how God works.
