MAGICAL MATTHEW 74

TRANSLATION MATTHEW 14: 34

Completing their crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. The people of that place recognised him and sent news to all the surrounding countryside, so that they brought to him all who were afflicted. They begged just to touch the fringe of his cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.

Doubtless modern readers imagine an orderly and polite event here, but the response of people without hope – the expression used of them points to misery- to the presence of a healer, would be overwhelmingly urgent. Jesus does nothing but allow them to come to him; it is the greatness of their trust which results in their cure.

Perhaps Matthew imagines Jesus as radiating health as he does in the incident with the woman who touches his cloak in 9:20. Perhaps also, although it is a mere guess on my part, there is some echo of Job 26:14:

“Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; And how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?”
