TRANSLATION MATTHEW 20:29

As they were going out of Jericho, a large crowd followed them. And -see this-! there were two blind men seated by the road, who when they heard that Jesus was going by, cried out, “Do us a kindness, Lord, Son of David!” The crowd gave them a warning, that they should hush, but they cried out all the louder, “Lord, do us a kindness, Son of David.” Jesus stopped to speak with them, “What do you want? ” he asked. They said to him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened!” Jesus, touched to his core, pressed their eyes and immediately they recovered their sight, and followed him.

Matthew again edits Mark here, making it two blind men instead of one. It occurs to me that his habit of making two out of one is to establish the event as public, where two people can have given legal testimony of its occurrence.

The special importance of this incident is that the blind men use a Messianic greeting, Lord, Son of David, to Jesus, thereby declaring their faith in him. The crowd, recognising the danger of messianic episodes, try to shut them up, but they persist. Jesus moved by their condition and their trust, heals them.

Given repeated evidence of the blindness of the religious leaders and even Jesus’ pupils, the meaning of the story is obvious: those who allow Jesus to heal their blindness will follow him on his way.
